The Ultimate New Zealand Distillery Map
This is a general framework, not verified, current specifics — confirm details directly with the relevant distillery or authority before relying on them.
An overview of where New Zealand's craft distilleries are concentrated, and how to use our directory to plan a visit — Auckland, Canterbury and Otago lead the country by number of producers.
Note: this overview is based on the Distil-Nation NZ directory (data/mock.ts), which itself notes that some regional and visitor details still need verification (see data/nz-distilleries.md). Treat specific opening details as a starting point, and confirm directly with a distillery before visiting.
New Zealand's 100+ tracked distilleries aren't evenly spread — a handful of regions account for the majority of producers, and within those regions, a meaningful subset are actually set up for visitors.
Where distilleries are concentrated
Based on our directory: Auckland (29), Canterbury (14), Otago (12), Waikato (9), Bay of Plenty (8), Wellington (7) and Marlborough (7) are the largest clusters, with smaller numbers spread across Tasman, Taranaki, Southland, Manawatū-Whanganui, Hawke's Bay, West Coast and Northland. See "Which regions of New Zealand produce spirits?" for the full breakdown.
Not every distillery is visitor-ready
Of the 107 distilleries in our directory, 41 currently list either public tours or a cellar door/visitor centre — the rest operate on a by-appointment or production-only basis. Before planning a visit anywhere, check the specific distillery's own current visitor information (opening days, booking requirements, and whether they're currently operating tours) rather than relying solely on directory tags.
How to use this as a starting point
- Browse our Distilleries directory and filter by region to see what's near where you're travelling.
- Cross-check "hasTours" or "cellar door" style listings against the distillery's own website before building an itinerary around them.
- See our regional guides — Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin — plus "A complete guide to New Zealand distillery tours" for more detail on planning a visit.
We'd like this to eventually become an interactive, filterable map directly on the site — for now, this article and the Distilleries directory are the best starting points.
